Decode the architecture of a Parker phrase—and make it fly across the fretboard. Flight Patterns Vol. 2 continues our exploration of Charlie Parker’s melodic language with another original phrase extracted from one of Bird’s improvised solos—this time coming from a major II–V–I context. |
In this study | ◆ A close architectural relative of the Volume 1 line — but this time the resolution takes flight in the opposite direction, reaching upward into the next octave | | ◆ The same architecture redirected to four harmonic destinations on Gmaj7: Root, 3rd, 5th and Maj7 | | ◆ Three large vertical fretboard positions, each a two-octave view of the arpeggio, with several pathways to every target | | ◆ Every pattern carried into the relative minor II–V–I: F#min7(b5) – B7alt – Emin7 |
|
One phrase. Four harmonic destinations. Three fretboard territories. Major and relative minor. Countless flight patterns. |

Dig Deeper The Art of the Enclosure If Flight Patterns has you hearing how Parker’s lines find their chord tones, the enclosure is the next device to study: a target note circled from above and below before the line lands on it. It is a signature of bebop phrasing, and Hristo has a whole shelf on it — the ENCLOSED series and the Pentatonic Target Tone Designs studies, which carry the idea into modern pentatonic playing. |
ENCLOSEDMelodic Enclosure Ideas$20Where the series begins: a target note approached from above and below — diatonic, chromatic or both — plus Hristo’s “negative enclosures” for a modern outside sound. | ENCLOSED Part IIPentatonic Fury$22The same devices inside the minor pentatonic scale — three enclosure types, worked across the entire fretboard. | ENCLOSED10 ii–V7alt–I Phrases$10Part II put to work: ten ii–V7alt–I phrases in C major that turn the pentatonic enclosures into usable vocabulary. | ENCLOSEDHarmonic Enclosures$10Enclosing harmony instead of single notes — chordal enclosure ideas over an Amin7 (Dorian) foundation, with a backing track. | Pentatonic Target Tone DesignsMini-lesson seriesFreeA free way in: modern enclosures and chromatic target tones inside pentatonic shapes. | Target Tone Designs Part 2Moving Targets$11Enclosures and target tones set in motion — small melodic cells displaced and sequenced across positions and keys, with a video masterclass. |
