They include a house cleaner, a certified nurse’s assistant, a hair braider and a home health aid who were recently called to 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan and arrested by immigration officials, according to advocates and a review of a half-dozen federal habeas corpus petitions filed over the past two weeks.
The women — all immigrants from West African countries — held a legal status shielding them from deportation to their home countries, after immigration judges determined they would be in danger if they returned. But due to a new U.S. Supreme Court order issued last week, they could be vulnerable to speedy deportation to another, third country.
Immigration advocates fear these recent arrests point to an attempt by the Trump administration to ramp up third-country deportations, with the Supreme Court slated to consider the matter later this year. But the administration says such removals are “an essential public safety tool.”
Of the half-dozen cases reviewed by The City Reporter and Documented, only one mentioned any criminal history, which was a 2008 disorderly conduct conviction.
