In May 2016, in the heat of the American presidential campaign
, artist Jeffrey Reid installed large portraits of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the streets of New York.
The works were displayed near Tompkins Square Park, in the East Village.
And suddenly, a completely improbable scene unfolds.
A black and white dog walks past the giant portrait of Donald Trump.
A few seconds later, he lifts his leg… and starts urinating directly on the candidate's face.
Perfect timing: photographer John Iz is standing right in front of the scene.
He clicks his camera at the exact moment the dog does his business in front of the portrait.
The photo quickly goes viral.
But contrary to what one might think, the scene was apparently not staged.
According to the photographer, the dog's owner was looking at his phone and didn't even immediately notice what his animal was doing.
When he realizes it, he simply tugs on the leash before walking away.
No staging, no special training.
Just a dog, a political artwork installed in the street… and a photographer there at exactly the right moment
