Dear New Yorkers,

The nation’s largest school system has about 670 elementary and 140 K-8 schools, roughly 250 standalone middle schools and nearly 90 6-12 schools, and more than 400 high schools with 700 programs. There are also nearly 300 charter schools.

It can all be overwhelming. So how should families narrow down their lists of schools to apply for? Where should they look for information? Which data is important? And what should families ask on school visits?

As high school admissions season gets underway this week, The City Reporter and Chalkbeat New York have a new guide on how families can vet their school options and make informed decisions. It includes potential red flags, key school metrics to understand and other things to keep in mind.

Our newsrooms are also joining forces to hold a live workshop based on these recommendations — sourced partly from education professionals and experts — on Oct. 15 at the Brooklyn Public Library's Central Branch. Sign up here to join.

Contempt Bid in Brooklyn Dems Dispute

Warring Brooklyn Democratic factions were back in court Tuesday as the fight over who will control the county party appears far from over.

Former Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn sat not far from Rep. Nydia Velázquez, a longtime opponent of the county machine, though they barely exchanged glances. Party reformers served Bichotte Hermelyn with legal papers, seeking for her to be held in contempt of court over the old guard’s attempts to retain power after losing a majority of Democratic district leaders in the June primary.

The contempt bid came after Bichotte Hermelyn and her allies held a vote Sunday naming state Assemblymember Nikki Lucas as the new party chair, relying on newly appointed executive committee members added through a vote that both a lower court and appeals court had found illegal.

Sunday’s vote also appeared to breach a separate temporary restraining order. Asked about the apparent violations, Bichotte Hermelyn deferred to lawyer Amy Beth Marion, who said her client wasn’t bound by the order because she hadn’t been named in the lawsuit that spawned it.

“Why would she be concerned about that? Due process, a right to be heard. We were denied the right to be heard,” Marion said. A judge will consider the contempt petition on Oct. 19.
