We’ve launched a new weekly newsletter, The CUNY Scoop, aimed at shining a light on the massive public university and its community members. CUNY enrolls roughly 250,000 students and employs more than 40,000 people.
The newsletter is anchored by Aisha Baiocchi, our new reporter on this important beat. Say hi to her — and send her tips — at abaiocchi@thecityreporter.nyc.
One news nugget out of CUNY this week: 700 students were able to use free OMNY cards on local transit for the first time Monday under a city-funded pilot program. But $700,000 in state funding did not come through for the initiative, limiting how many people can benefit, according to the City Council speaker’s office.
Aisha will keep reporting on the university system and her newsletter will spotlight developments and personalities at CUNY campuses across the city. It will also include required reading and key dates to help university members navigate everyday issues.

Today, Oct. 8, is DAF Day, when people come together to make the most of their donor-advised funds. We’re happy to be part of it.
If you have a DAF, now is a great opportunity to support the journalism you love. As a nonprofit, The City Reporter accepts donations through donor-advised funds, and every gift helps us continue providing the hard-hitting, independent journalism you count on.
