WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova #15-25 - Anarchist Libraries - Back to books back to ideas (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

"People assimilate less and less. Everyone is more and more impatient,
more agitated and restless. The highways and other roads of every kind
are crowded with people who go everywhere, everywhere, and it is as if
they were going nowhere. The refugees of gasoline, the wanderers of the
internal combustion engine. The cities are transformed into mobile car
hotels, the people increasingly dedicated to nomadism go from place to
place, following the course of the lunar tides, spending the night in
the room where you were today and I last night." Ray Bradbury -
Fahrenheit 451

Back to the roots, back to material solidity. To real discussions,
physical places of conflict before meeting. Faced with a reality that
crumbles between our fingers, a memory of what anarchist thought is,
which disappears in the face of media doublethink and the sweet
constraint of new communication channels, we could only aspire to
rethink the conflictual relationship between what this world imposes -
the digitalization and dematerialization of relationships - and what is
antiquated that we carry in our hearts and are not willing to abandon -
the refusal of consent and the love for unique and sensual encounters
between individuals fighting against this existence.

Why go to an anarchist library again? Why sacrifice hours and days of
one's life to keep a door open to a chance encounter rather than closing
oneself in the perpetual effortless availability of the website? Because
there is more.

Feeding the birth of dark alcoves in which the press and discussion mix
means continuing to blow on embers that we want to make blaze. It means
not giving in to the irreversibility of the loss of meaning, to the
flattening of language, to the uselessness of physicality in
communicating one's desires. It means not giving in to isolation but
always remaining eager and confident of being able to meet eyes that we
feel burning in unison with the beat of our heart. And this meeting can
only happen on the basis of ideas. We will meet many people in our
lives, of course. We will share passions and interests, days of play and
nights of love, but there will be few individuals who will mark the path
of our life in letters of fire. And when these dreams suffocate,
starting again from ideas is the only way to stay alive. Not giving in
to the mediocrity of survival also means continuing to shout in the
streets who we are not and what we do not want. Lending an ear and
looking for a faint echo of our dreams, which sometimes arrives
unthinkably and in unexpected ways. The social fabric is not a mystery
to be revealed with the scientific determination of the process of cause
and effect.

A non-site

http://www.anarchistlibraries.network

We therefore propose a non-site, a small taste of something bigger,
which can only be such if we take up the challenge of wanting to
continue to question the world in its physicality, to continue to keep
that door open, from which to let visceral anger enter and from which to
exit with thoughts and actions irreconcilable with this oppressive
social pacification, this climate of war and apocalypse, this
suppression of individual uniqueness.

On the other hand, sharing information already entails greater
visibility for the different spaces that preserve collections and want
to make them accessible and viewable. Also because if at a global level
there is a virtual space in which to share anarchist material that
encourages us to bring physical spaces to life, collaboratively
improving the quality of descriptions/metadata and above all that
facilitates the printing and dissemination of such material in the
outside world, then yes, thinking beyond national-linguistic borders and
Churches can become an element of rupture with this world. In any case,
we have inserted an "omission" function so that each space can decide
what to show and what not during the search process from their account:
it is therefore not a question of finding a forced consensus on what is
anarchist and what is not, but each group of people can independently
operate their own evaluations and considerations. This is also an
element so that in this project, which does not want to become a
political identity or a reference of "belonging", we can find
sensibilities and projects united by being enemies of authority, but
with different nuances and also large project divergences.

How to contribute

Through http://www.anarchistlibraries.network we would like to support
the diffusion of anarchist ideas by making the various databases
searchable, printable and improvable (collaboratively); giving
visibility to the physical spaces that preserve anarchist libraries and
archives within them.

You can contribute to the project by sharing your materials and
improving the metadata and completeness of the information.

Sharing your archives can happen in various ways (as explained in the
technical notes).

For any request or to add your data source, contact us. You will be
helped and supported to best organize the import of the catalog and the
creation of your profile:

info@anarchistlibraries.network

Is everything downloadable?

The online re-proposal of texts and scans of books and magazines, both
ancient and contemporary, is not a universally shared practice. It is
possible to insert your archive using different options:

Public reality and accessible catalog - All projects that are publicly
accessible and that want to make their catalog freely available online.

Public reality and reserved catalog - For projects that are publicly
accessible but that want to keep their catalog available only if
authentication has been performed.

Private reality and reserved catalogue - For all those text funds that
are not publicly accessible (for example private libraries), but that
still want to share their catalogue and make it consultable if
authentication has been carried out within the site.

Technical notes

This collector works by collecting different data sources that come from
different archives or libraries (oai-pmh, spreadsheets, hard disks of
pdf with any index) and makes them consultable. Each data source has an
account from which it can perform different operations including setting
up linguistic relations (text B translated from text A), and can unify
both the references to who wrote a text (see for example the problem of
different transliterations/translations of names) and unify the
different texts under the same entry if uploaded separately. The logical
reference model is the IFLA-LRM, that is, not a simple list of
characteristics, but the relationship and relation between the elements
of a catalogue. This project is oriented towards physicality despite
being a digital project. In fact, each space/site will have the
possibility to insert its own data, describe its activity and so on. The
project accepts both bibliographic citations and raw scans as well as
editable and reprintable texts using the amusewiki software platform.
This means that the collection can be enriched and completed not only
with the "name" of the books, not only with their "scan" but also with
their "text", paginable and reproducible in print. However, each
library, archive or publishing house will be able to decide
independently whether to make its material "public" (see the various
"anarchist library" projects) or "private", that is, consultable only by
logged in users, that is, for example, who are inside other physical
spaces that have an account. So, in fact, it is as if it were a large
interlibrary system not only of titles but also of the content of the
texts. The development and improvement of the metadata is completely
collaborative and does not affect the way in which the individual spaces
have done their cataloging.

In conclusion

Based on a federative principle, this project does not replace
individual sites, but offers the possibility of aggregating their
contents in a non-hierarchical and completely independent and autonomous
way. The proposal therefore moves on the methodological level and not,
for example, on what the different entities decide to conserve and index.

Given that complete access to the texts present on the collector and the
possibility of creating a user account to be able to do a complete
search should represent a further reason to go to the physical places,
the site cannot become an alternative to them.

We would like to be able to simplify the process, within and between
anarchist spaces, of finding, (re)printing, translating, conserving in
paper form and/or distributing written texts as well as the
relationships (including international ones) between groups and/or
individuals - even anonymously.

Furthermore, making metadata easily editable, based on the new
standards, and the reconstruction of bibliographical relationships
between the different texts and the different translations, on the basis
of which it is possible to potentially develop further, more in-depth
historical-archival meta-analyses.

Finally, rationalizing the format of files as well as metadata,
facilitating the possibility of making massive backups, avoiding
building projects on links that are then interrupted, storing
information on adequate and non-commercial and/or censorable servers and
having the possibility of knowing what already exists (for example
scans) or what is missing (for example in the collections of
periodicals) in a rapid and intuitive way.
