We publish a second translation from the first issue dated
January-February 2025 of the newspaper Espoir/Al Amal jointly publishedby the Sudanese Anarchists Rally, the CNT-AIT France and their friends.
This article highlights the clear position of Sudanese anarchists in the
ongoing civil war opposing both the State and the RSF militias, the
former Janjaweed, who in 2023 were trained by Italian military
instructors and with whom Italy, together with the European Union, has
continued to maintain relations throughout the civil war.
In a 2021 note, the Sudanese Anarchists Rally introduced itself as
follows: "The group was created in Khartoum at the end of 2020 after we
brought together all the anarchists in Khartoum. We have been together
since the revolution of December 2018 and some of us have known each
other since high school and university. We, anarchists in Khartoum, are
members of the "resistance committees" and raise our flags during
marches with the rest of the revolutionaries, and promote anarchy by
writing graffiti on walls. We oppose all types of authoritarianism. We
stand for freedom of expression and individual autonomy
Opposing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) does not mean siding with the
state, especially those forces that have predicted the trajectory of
this war from the beginning. However, today the propaganda directed
against the revolutionary forces seeks to distort and water down their
long-standing opposition to the existence of this war. mafia since its
inception. The policies of dividing Sudan, which the RSF has accelerated
more aggressively than the state itself, reveal the real intentions that
the state institution has sought to impose by force and coups.
I want to highlight the nature of the discourse of the armed forces' top
brass, highlighting the rhetoric we have witnessed about the newly
formed militias under the pretext of fighting the RSF. These stories
have paved the way for the affirmation of a particular belief in the
military weakness of the state's armed forces. This in turn opens the
door to the emergence of new armies and new armed groups. This is the
mafia policy of the state, characterized by disgustingly sentimental
discourses that in no way reflect the sacrifices of the Sudanese people.
Reconciliation with those who killed people and paying homage to them -
which gives them a platform, a legitimacy - cannot reduce the importance
of the crimes they committed. On the contrary, they reinforce these
crimes and motivate new genocides. Popular forces must start building a
counter-force to combat the RSF mafia propaganda and the Islamist mafia,
directly addressing the lies that accumulate and exacerbate crises, the
consequences of which fall solely on the people.
The struggle in Sudan transcends traditional historical forms of
resistance, such as armed struggle (through militarized political
groups) or civil struggle (through the creation of unions, protests and
demonstrations, political defense). Sudan's unique context has given
rise to various forms of struggle, shaped by the multifaceted nature of
oppression[notably through the Revolutionary Committees, which take
charge of many public services and structure civil society].
Diversity reflects the complexity of the country, including its
injustices. However, anarchists stand out for their in-depth examination
of a crucial problem rooted in the structure of Sudanese society:
tribalism, a force more regressive and extreme than nationalism itself.12
For decades, Sudanese anarchists have been critically analyzing the role
of tribalism and its domination, tracing its impact from the dawn of
small tribal states in war, through colonial-era dependencies and tribal
alliances, to its current status as a driving force behind Sudan's
ongoing conflicts. While tribalism remains at the heart of the ongoing
war and its prosecution, Sudanese political forces often approach the
issue hesitantly, constrained either by political ties to tribes or by
fear of confronting tribal authority.
