As the "Osnabrück for All" alliance, we have been engaging with political developments in the city of Osnabrück for two years now. Our focus is primarily on the "10-Point Program," which was jointly developed by Mayor Katharina Pötter and the Osnabrück Police Department. --- It is obvious that the measures adopted therein primarily affect the poorest of the poor and further contribute to gentrification.
Over the past two years, our alliance has worked intensively to draw attention to these issues (displacement and gentrification) and to offer a critical perspective on the city's plans. To this end, we have organized rallies, demonstrations, lectures, and informal gatherings. In 2025, we, as an alliance, decided to engage in dialogue with the people on the ground. We wanted to gain insight into the thoughts and experiences of the people who pass by Johannisstraße every day.
To engage with people, we set up a small stand on Johannisstrasse for several hours on two Saturdays.
The reactions to us varied greatly: Some people were immediately engaged. Others reacted very negatively. And there were those who asked skeptical questions.
Since many people assumed we were trying to sell something, it was all the more important for us to make it clear from the outset that we were interested in their opinions, assessments, and experiences.
To record the results of these conversations and evaluate them later, we devised eleven questions, divided into two parts.
In the first part, we asked six questions, to which each person could indicate on a scale of 1 to 5 how much the question applied to them.
We used a bar chart to analyze this data, as shown below.
In the second part, we asked five more questions, to which people could answer in one or two sentences.
Since we only took notes during the second part of the interview, we would like to briefly summarize the most important findings and the most frequent responses from the participants.
As the bar chart already suggests, the dominant topic was housing.
In almost every conversation, the lack of social housing was mentioned, and it was stated that the city and politicians should prioritize this issue more.
The term "homelessness" came up repeatedly in the discussions, and many respondents expressed a desire for a more socially responsible housing policy.
This highlights the respondents' dissatisfaction with the city's decisions, which seem to prioritize the punitive displacement of people over the creation of social housing.
The city is not focused on ensuring that everyone has a roof over their head unconditionally, but rather on maximizing the profits of real estate speculators. The people we interviewed were of the opinion that housing should not be a commodity used to enrich a select few.
Another interesting finding from the open questions, also reflected in the bar chart, is that the connection between video surveillance and AI is not readily apparent to many people.
A common response to the question of whether they felt observed by the new cameras was that they did not, as they had nothing to hide. However, when asked about the impact of AI, significantly more concern was expressed.
Conclusion:
The conversations we had clearly demonstrate that the housing market is a central political issue for many people.
For us as an alliance, it is obvious how much the interests of the market, which aims to maximize profits for a select few, contradict the interests of the majority of the population Brasil, Bento Goncalves/RS, OSL: namely, the need to have a roof over their heads without having to spend the majority of their income on it.
These are the interests of the majority of the population, namely the need to have a roof over their heads without having to spend the majority of their income on it. The security aspect, which is used as a pretext to harass and further displace people who are already the poorest of the poor, should also be criticized and fought from a standpoint of solidarity.
