Parker meets Metheny! A deep study in bebop language, chromaticism, technique & fretboard navigation. What happens when Charlie Parker-inspired bebop vocabulary collides with the chromatic melodic mechanics of Pat Metheny? The Chromatic Detour takes two seemingly different musical languages and brings them together into one extensive system for developing modern jazz vocabulary across the entire guitar fretboard. |
In this study | ◆ Two Parker-inspired II–V–I phrases from the Flight Patterns series, taken apart: how they are built, how they move through the harmony and how they resolve | | ◆ Then the detour: the Chromatic Methenyisms devices — percussive hammer-ons, descending major-third relationships, chromatic connective lines — bridging the two phrases into one continuous language | | ◆ G major and its seven modal positions in three dimensions: horizontally on every adjacent two-string set, vertically through the positions, and diagonally across both at once | | ◆ A 21-page PDF study with an extensive video masterclass |
|
The Parker-inspired vocabulary becomes the destination. The chromatic material becomes the connective tissue. |

Dig Deeper The Art of the Enclosure If Flight Patterns has you hearing how Parker’s lines find their chord tones, the enclosure is the next device to study: a target note circled from above and below before the line lands on it. It is a signature of bebop phrasing, and Hristo has a whole shelf on it — the ENCLOSED series and the Pentatonic Target Tone Designs studies, which carry the idea into modern pentatonic playing. |
ENCLOSEDMelodic Enclosure Ideas$20Where the series begins: a target note approached from above and below — diatonic, chromatic or both — plus Hristo’s “negative enclosures” for a modern outside sound. | ENCLOSED Part IIPentatonic Fury$22The same devices inside the minor pentatonic scale — three enclosure types, worked across the entire fretboard. | ENCLOSED10 ii–V7alt–I Phrases$10Part II put to work: ten ii–V7alt–I phrases in C major that turn the pentatonic enclosures into usable vocabulary. | ENCLOSEDHarmonic Enclosures$10Enclosing harmony instead of single notes — chordal enclosure ideas over an Amin7 (Dorian) foundation, with a backing track. | Pentatonic Target Tone DesignsMini-lesson seriesFreeA free way in: modern enclosures and chromatic target tones inside pentatonic shapes. | Target Tone Designs Part 2Moving Targets$11Enclosures and target tones set in motion — small melodic cells displaced and sequenced across positions and keys, with a video masterclass. |

The Metheny Side Chromatic Methenyisms The Chromatic Detour borrows its connective tissue from Chromatic Methenyisms — Hristo’s long-running series on the chromatic ornamentation, articulation and melodic architecture of Pat Metheny’s playing. If the detour leaves you wanting more of that sound, these are the iconic studies to begin with. |
CHROMATIC METHENYISMSThe original book$35Where it all began: the unique ways Metheny uses chromaticism in his lines — the ideas, architecture and phrasing — with a 30-minute video tutorial and two backing tracks. | Minor DriftThe minor triad, ornamented$25The minor triad in all its inversions and positions, dressed with three chromatic ornamentation mechanisms for a very Methenyesque touch. | Major DriftThe major triad, ornamented$25The same three mechanisms on the major triad across the fretboard, with Pat’s articulation and phrasing detailed in the transcription. | Breaking PointThe “Third Wind” solo break$30Pat’s iconic solo break on “Third Wind” — its chromatic devices extracted and grown into long creative exercises and phrases, with a 67-minute video masterclass. | Twisted 251sBreaking Point · ii–V–I phrasesFreeA free way in: two ii–V–I phrases in C major built with the same chromatic techniques and line contour as the “Third Wind” break. | Hammer It OutMinor blues, percussive motion$20Pat’s percussive hammer-on technique — the very device the Detour borrows — turned into phrases over a 12-bar minor blues. |
