EU, deportation of a Syrian refugee in Belgrade‏

No safety for Syrian refugees in Europe: Serbian border police reject application for asylum and abuse Syrian refugees upon arrival in Belgrade.
Deportation to Beirut

09.12.2014, W., a 30 year old Syrian refugee from Aleppo arrived at the airport in Belgrade with a false passport.
As a deserter from the army he wanted to apply for asylum in Serbia, but his appeal was not accepted by the police, and instead, as he himself states, he was severely beaten. He asked for help, crying, declaring that a refusal would mean death, but he wasn’t listen to. On the 10th of December his wife had contacted and sought help from the “Nawal Syriahorra” network in Catania, Sicily which primarily supports Syrian refugees, after she had not heard from her husband for 24 hours.
Thanks to the actions of his wife, W. was quickly able to reach them, and was then able to contact the Italian network directly. He explained, that another refugee from Sri Lanka was in the same situation as him. After the attack, he explained, he was taken to the emergency room in Belgrade, the “Urgentni Centar Beograd” however he was then driven back to the airport. On the 12th of December at 23.40 he still hadn’t been granted asylum status, but instead was forced onto in a plane of a Serbian Airline, probably Air Serbia, that flies at this time nonstop to Beirut, und bought him back to Lebanon with the words “we are putting you on a plane, with force if necessary” .W. wore evidence of his head injuries, and was deported to Beirut with a bandage on his head and a black eye. Regarding the refugee from Sri Lanka, he could only say that he still finds himself in the airport in Belgrade, as he himself was deported.

W. finds himself still in Beirut, there, only through contacts of the Italian network, could he find accommodation, since he was robbed by the Serbian police and had no more money!

During W.’s stay in Belgrade, the Nawal Syriahorra network was still informing various support groups, such as borderline-europe and welcome2eu as well as amnesty international in London about the case and received the answer, that the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights had been informed. The employees have ordinary access to the airport transit area. At 19.56 amnesty International confirmed that the employees of the Belgrade Centre were attempting to speak to W. who is still in custody,  and “has not been found”, so it is likely that the Serbian Border Police have denied contact with W. W. is still currently in Lebanon, but according to Lebanese statements on the ground it’s not sure. A deportation to Syria, for him as a deserter would be life threatening!

EU,UK,GREECE,The government of mobility 1. Conditioned freedom and mobility «on probation»‏

Ciao,

You can find below some reflections concerning the transformations of welfare
in EU, how they are affecting internal migrants and how they have been experimented on extra-eu migrants.
All the best
Paola

The government of mobility 1. Conditioned freedom and mobility «on probation»
by LAVORO INSUBORDINATO
→ IT

British Prime Minister David Cameron has recently stated that «freedom of movement it is not an unqualified right». Otherwise stated, the freedom of movement can be limited. Hence, with these words Cameron clearly expresses the spirit of our times. Indeed, in several European countries it is taking place not only an erosion of social rights paralleling a generalized increase in job precarity, but also a growing tendency to limit the possibility for internal and external migrants to access welfare rights. The latter tendency is happening especially in such countries as England and Germany that have, since the beginning of the crisis, become destinations for an increasing number of migrants from neighbouring European countries. The national measures adopted to limit the freedom of movement do not contradict the declarations of the European Union that considers the internal mobility as a positive element able to homogenize its space by bridging the gap between job supply and demand and the differentials in «human capital» and of unemployment rates. We are, rather, dealing with two faces of a government of mobility that, while fostering movements that are favorable to profit and in line with the regional organization of production, opposes the desire that millions of internal and external migrants have not to be deemed just as disposable labour force and to be able to effectively choose where to go and where to live...read more...

Athens 5 December 2014. It continues to the bitter end , in front of Greek Parliament the garrison and the hunger strike of three hundred Syrians , mostly families with small children , who claim the right to be welcomed in dignity and demand the possibility to leave Greece and reach another European country . This is a protest that highlights all the negative effects of the Dublin Regulation III, nailing in the first country of entry all the potential asylum seekers ,at the point that many of them prefer to be rejected at the border, or to continue the journey placing themselves in the hands of “land-smugglers ", fueling the business of illegal immigration , rather than be forced to release the fingerprints in a country like Greece , which cannot be defined "safe " for asylum seekers for the systematic shortcomings of its reception centers and for non-performance of the full-blown European Directives and Regulations relating to international protection .
http://www.balcanicaucaso.org/aree/Grecia/Centri-di-detenzione-in-Grecia-benvenuti-all-inferno-157449 (Italian) /http://balkans.courriers.info/article26072.html
International reports confirm for years the abuses of the Greek authorities against refugees , but are unable to find a solution for those who are trapped into a country that has a systematic lack of the reception system , so that the international courts have suspended Dublin referrals to Greece .
Until now Syrian refugees have turned exclusively to the Greek authorities without any kind of outcomes.
There is no hope to leave Greece and reach other European countries also because the European Union continues to lock down the borders, even the inland borders, to prevent the so called secondary movements from one state to another , with a more rigid application of the Dublin Regulation III, decided at a police level, with multilateral agreements such as the latest ones between Italy, Austria and Germany .
We reiterate once again the request for the immediate opening of humanitarian channels for refugees of third countries, today mainly Syrians ,
present in Greece .
The European Union cannot simply suspend Dublin referrals to Greece and then close the legal channels to entry into other European Union countries for refugees who remain trapped there. Chi riesce a sfuggire raggiungendo altri paesi EU subisce abusi altrettanto gravi e finisce anche per essere arrestato, come si sta verificando in Bulgaria ed in Polonia. Those who manage to escape and reach other EU countries are seriously abused and they often end up being arrested, as in Bulgaria and Poland .
The arrival of a growing number of Syrian refugees in Europe has all the characteristics of a " mass influx of displaced persons ." This is why the EU should introduce instruments and channels of temporary protection provided for by Directive 2001/55 / EC , to decongest the asylum system and enable a secondary mobility in different EU countries without being subjected to “land-smugglers . Once equipped with a temporary document of legal residence , and therefore the freedom of movement , refugees should have recognized the right to seek asylum where they have family or social bonds and in countries that have a reception systems respecting human dignity and the right of family reunification.
The new European Commissioners , the Parliament , as well as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior of the EU countries must answer for the continuous carnage taking place in the seas in front of Europe , for the inhumane conditions of service , first reception and detention of refugees , migrants asylum seekers and economic migrants . Should take note of the failure of devices such as Dublin , and work for integration policies really effective as well as guaranteeing the right to freedom of movement .
the Civil society in Italy and in Europe asks to take urgent actions to monitor the safety and security of Syrian citizens now present in Greece , that is guaranteed the possibility for them to move to other EU countries for family rejoining or to request international protection

Orangutans under attack -- the plan to win‏ - Indonesia - EU

Dear friends,

Last year over a million of us successfully froze the plan to kill orangutans but the battle to save them is heating up again and unless we raise our voices once more - we could lose the last place on Earth where orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants roam free together. Click below to sign the urgent petition:

SIGN THE PETITION
Last year over 1.3 million of us called for the protection of the last place on Earth where orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants still roam free together. Amazingly, we froze the proposed plan that would have destroyed vast swathes of pristine rainforest in Sumatra. But now the local government is gearing up to revive the destruction, unless we act.

Palm oil, paper and mining companies stand to make money from developing this delicate ecosystem, and their pressure on the government to start cutting trees is working. But Europe holds the key to an even more powerful trade incentive for Indonesia, and experts say if the EU Ambassador speaks up now, he could protect the orangutans for good.

Conservation organisations in Sumatra are doing their best to get his attention but they’re asking for our help to amplify the urgent call.Let’s shine the global spotlight on the EU Ambassador to make sure he acts before it is too late. Sign now:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/aceh_rainforest_petition_loc/?bEESPab&v=38559

Approval of the plan to free up this enormous area of forest for mining, paper and palm oil plantations is an environmental disaster of catastrophic proportions. This place is the last chance for many species already in serious trouble.

As the EU Ambassador for Indonesia, Olof Skoog, can provide the political and technical support needed for the local government to properly review the current destructive plan and convince them to protect the most fragile part of the rainforest. There is considerable momentum already towards this solution with individual EU countries taking an interest but it needs to be a coordinated approach to have a strong impact and the Ambassador is the best person for the job

The EU has been a major donor to sustainable development in Sumatra and Mr. Skoog should feel obligated to ensure that the gains made through this investment are not being put at serious risk by this destructive plan. Insiders say the only reason he’s not taking action already is because he hasn’t realised just how important this issue is and what he can do.

The biggest battle to save this rainforest is yet to be won. Let’s raise the volume of the call to the Ambassador and let him know we’re relying on him to save one of the most important forests on the planet. Click below to sign the petition:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/aceh_rainforest_petition_loc/?bEESPab&v=38559

Against all odds, we already helped delay the approval of this plan -- ensuring the national government took action to amend it. Then we came together and saved one million dollars worth of habitat for endangered species including orangutans. This is the last step to win a safe future for orangutans in Indonesia, and the players are all in place to make this a win!

With hope and determination,

Lisa, Emma, Ari, Sayeeda, Emily, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team
