THE CITY Scoop: Proposed Salary Boosts Would Do Little to Help Struggling EMT’s, Labor Leaders Say

View this email in your browser

Dear New Yorkers,

The mayor recently cheered a big contract deal with the city’s largest municipal worker union. But one group of labor leaders is saying loud and clear: Count us out.

Union reps for thousands of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics say the agreement between Mayor Eric Adams and District Council 37 will barely do anything to address the huge pay gap between frontline responders — who currently make a salary that starts at the equivalent of $18.94 an hour — and uniformed officers like firefighters and police.

EMTs and paramedics are compensated as civilian workers despite facing many of the same risks on the job as first responders in uniform, they say.

“It's frustrating. And that's why we have a retention issue. We lose five to 10 people every week that are resigning,” said Oren Barzilay, president of FDNY EMS Local 2507.

Some other items of note:

  • More than three years after the Flushing Aquatic Center pool shut its doors in January 2020 for repairs that were supposed to take “at least six weeks,” the swimming facility reopened. A planned roof reconstruction will require the pool to close again in a couple years, however, and the borough’s only other indoor public pool is also scheduled to close for repairs.  .

  • The city’s once thriving film and television production industry has hit a snag as work booms in New Jersey, Georgia and elsewhere, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul and industry representatives.  They say that a New York tax credit incentive program must be made more generous as other locations up the ante. “The competitive landscape has changed dramatically,” the president of Steiner Studios told THE CITY.

  • “What does ‘Home’ mean to you?” That’s the question retiree/artist Judith Rubenstein asks of unhoused New Yorkers for accordion-style booklets containing their replies.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Tuesday's Weather Rating: 3/10. Snow and a wintry mix will gradually come to an end this morning. Clouds will be slow to clear, and highs will only reach near 40 as a result. Improving weather and chilly tonight. The vibes are wintry out there!!

THE KICKER: Cardi B has a new gig … as mentor to the police? The rapper made an appearance at the NYPD Police Academy in Queens for a police mentorship program. The New York Post speculated that her appearance there was part of her court-ordered community service stemming from a 2018 strip club fight, but that didn’t dampen the mood; video shows her dancing in front of the classroom to raucous applause.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Tuesday.

Love,
THE CITY

(en) US, NYC, Alt. media - Anarchy in the Clemente at book fair and film fest

The Seventh Annual Anarchist Book Fair was held this past weekend at the Clemente Soto
Velez Cultural Center on the Lower East Side. ---- Dozens of tables with books, posters
and T-shirts filled the Suffolk St. center?s main floor. There were several workshops
focusing on such diverse topics as ?Pirate Party ? Why the Hell Would Anarchists Run for
Office?? ?Occupy and Anarchy,? ?The Climate Will Not Be Dumpsterd,? and ?Flatbush
Rebellion and the Murder of Kimani Gray.? ---- Greg Kelly of the North American Animal
Liberation press office came ?armed? and ready. ---- Saturday evening featured the
Anarchist Film Festival, organized by Priya Warcry. The five-hour showcase of films was
intended to foster a dialogue about resistance. ---- A highlight of the book fair was the
Anarchist Interview Project, an effort to record, gather and share the stories of people?s
experiences with anarchism.

?We are interested in getting a snapshot of the beating heart of anarchism through its
many voices,? explained co-organizer Damian Treffs.

People wrote their experiences with anarchism on paper taped up on the walls, part of the
Anarchist Interview Project.
The collective behind the project, Practical Anarchy, invited people into a curtained-off
area to be interviewed and have their thoughts recorded for an anticipated ?zine and,
eventually, a Web site of the recordings.

(en) US. NYC, Introducing... Caf? de Cleyre: Direct Action Reading Group and Film Series!

Dear Direct Actionists, Anarchists, Anti-Authoritarians, Autonomists, Agitators,
Instigators, Incendiaries, Troublemakers, Rabble-Rousers, Radicals, Revolutionaries,
Fomenters, Firebrands, Malcontents, Mischief Makers, Miscreants, Movers and Shakers, --
From the occupation of Zuccotti Park to the May Day General Strike, the Occupy movement
has engaged in direct action. As a result there has been a renewed interest in the concept
and its history. Let us take this opportunity to deepen our collective understanding! ----
Join us for our first gathering of Caf? de Cleyre--a direct action reading group and film
series! ---- Tuesday, July 24 16 Beaver (4th floor) 6:00 PM -- Caf?s have served as an
important site of social gathering and debate. In this spirit, and inspired by the
writings of anarchist and feminist Voltairine de Cleyre, we seek to study direct action so
as to inform our struggle against the state and capitalism.

In striving to develop consistency between our principles and interactions with one
another, this group offers a horizontal approach to learning. Drawing from personal
experiences as well as films and readings, Caf? de Cleyre is an opportunity to engage in a
participatory model in which everyone has something to offer and everyone has something to
learn. We place emphasis on asking questions over assuming answers.

We wish to explore questions such as:

What is direct action and what forms can it take?
What distinguishes direct action from other types of action?
When and where has direct action been used through history?
How does direct action work to dismantle all systems of oppression, such as white
supremacy, patriarchy, colonialism, heterosexism, transphobia, ableism, and ageism?

In future weeks, the group will collectively decide which texts to read and which films to
watch. Discussions will be guided by different facilitators each week. For the first
gathering, we are asking folks to read any and all of the following suggested pieces:

Voltairine de Cleyre, ?Direct Action,? in The Voltairine de Cleyre Reader, edited by
A. J. Brigati (pp. 38-50) (1912/2004)

David Graeber, ?Direct Action, Anarchism, Direct Democracy,? in Direct Action: An
Ethnography (pp. 201-238) (2009)

AK Thompson, ?Direct Action, Pedagogy of the Oppressed,? in Black Bloc, White Riot:
Anti-Globalization and the Genealogy of Dissent (pp. 59-79) (2010)

Additional readings (if you have the time):

Jason Brannigan, ?Direct Action Gets the Goods,? in Working Class Resistance 10 (2005)

Sans-Titres Bulletin 1, ?What is Direct Action?? A-Infos News (1999)

Rob Sparrow, ?Anarchist Politics & Direct Action? (2001)

David Wieck, ?The Habit of Direct Action,? in Reinventing Anarchy, Again, edited by
Howard Ehrlich (pp. 375-376) (1996)

We will also be viewing Shutdown: The Rise and Fall of Direct Action Against the War
(2008), a documentary reflecting on the shutdown and occupation of the Financial District
in San Francisco on March 20, 2003.

Tea and coffee will be provided; feel free to bring food! For more information, please
contact cafedecleyre@riseup.net.

So please join us:
