During the burning of dolls in our May 1st Column has been mentioned and attacked in the 
media and statements by representatives of the government. See you on the obligation to

the streets even during the dictatorship, demanding freedom for political prisoners, 
denouncing the disappearance of social activists, missing children by the military

Our pace has been maintained year after year led by different unions in conflict, the 
denunciation of distinct social problems that plague our neighborhoods and all of our 
people. Also, every year several blocks residents of these neighborhoods workers, who know 
the sacrifice and struggle have been present.

Support trade unions in conflict, pronouncement and participation in all popular 
plebiscites, active and sustained participation in all issues related to violation of 
human rights, freedom of expression, rejection of the U.S. invasion of Irak, among others.

This year, as we mentioned above, our column was guided by an overly sensitive and 
troubling issue for our neighborhoods. We are referring to police violence and abuse that 
is experienced in the form of everyday neighborhoods called periphery. Qualified with a 
content of social discrimination, " red " zones.
It is not a new problem, but in recent years has increased and these cases have been 
public knowledge. No doubt that the murdered young Sergio Santa Catalina is one example, 
but we want to say that this event is not disgusting, as if searching disclose an isolated

whole, beating the family, the residents in full the Health Center of Cerro, all handling 
of evidence at the murder scene, previous episodes of abuse against young neighborhood

workers. His function, given the position they occupy in the structure of the system is 
repression of striking and repress the people whenever required. Your institution is

of the rich and powerful, the owners of this system. The order that interests them is the

Columna Cerro - Teja

[ 1 ] Refers to the massive strikes of " solidarity unions " who stopped Uruguay in the 
years 1951 and 1952. On occasion Cerro and La Teja neighborhoods were besieged by the 
police and military forces as a function of being in these neighborhoods where the workers 
struggle developed with greater vigor and combativeness. Due to this siege, which isolated 
from the rest of these neighborhoods of Montevideo, the region came to be called the " 
38th parallel ", in allusion to the dividing line between North Korea and South during the 
Korean War ( 1950-1953 ). [ Translation note. ]

[ 2 ] The episode known as " masacre del Hospital Filter" occurred on the night of August 
24, 1994 in the vicinity of Filter hospital in Montevideo. At the time thousands of people 
were in hospital a vigil against the extradition of Basque citizens Jes?s Maria Goitia, 
Oteiza and Mikel Ib??ez Luiz Lizarride accused the Spanish government of being linked to 
ETA and who were admitted to hospital due to a hunger strike. The brutal repression 
promoted by the then government of Luis Lacalle resulted in hundreds of injured and two
