True to their word, French forces are proceeding with their planned assault on the refugees of Calais, destroying the homes and shelters, beginning the re-displacement of thousands. The goal, as stated by Fabienne Buccio, head of Police management: to reduce migrant numbers to a “manageable” population of 2000. “There is a largely unseen, or little reported battle of Calais” she said, “which the French government is beginning to win. We must remain humble. The problems are very great. But yes, I think we are starting to make real progress”.
This most one-sided battle - a fight between the force and brutality of the French state and a largely helpless population refugees and activists, took form four days ago as 55 CRS vans pulled up at the camp and unloaded hundreds of riot police. Forming a human shield, preventing residents of the camp from accessing their few possessions the police then began firing rounds of tear gas into the crowd, driving back parents, children and activists as they ensued with destruction of homes. Over the last three days deconstruction has continued, with police driving out around 300 residents thus far, mainly Iranians and Sudanese. While activists are being blockaded by force from protesting the assault, some residents have attempted peaceful protest. One example which acutely revealed the lie behind what was to be a ‘humane operation’ was the footage of a pregnant woman who, peacefully sitting on the roof of her home was apprehended, assaulted and arrested by police.
As footage of children in shock after being teargassed continues to come out, and of the fires started by teargas canisters, the mood of the camp descends into one of despair and helplessness. The refugees, victims of complex geopolitical forces to which states like France owe a great deal of responsibility, are being dealt with in the way in which states deal with most problems. Use force and law to deconstruct the homes and the people, quell or destroy resistance to injustice and continue to serve power.
This evening at 6.00pm there will be a demonstration at the French embassy in Dublin. Come and show your solidarity with the residents of Calais.

[Désobéissants] Les 6-9 août, à Paris - formation et actions contre l'arme nucléaire

pour tenter d'obtenir un référendum sur l'arme nucléaire.
A cette occasion, nous passons à l'action !
1. un mini-stage d'une journée est prévu à Paris le 6 août, et portera sur l'organisation d'actions contre l'arme nucléaire.
2. des actions seront organisées dans les jours qui suivent pour exiger un débat sur la question de l'arme nucléaire et l'organisation d'un référendum sur le maintien de cette arme pour la France. Un hébergement est prévu pour les militants qui le souhaiteraient.

L'arme de la faim
Le Saintais Jean-Marie Matagne ne s'alimente plus pour dire non au nucléaire
Source - 12 juin 2012 - «Je suis un soixante-huitard attardé. Je dirais même vétuste. » La bouteille d'eau posée à côté de lui, Jean-Marie Matagne trouve encore la force de plaisanter. Après avoir perdu une quinzaine de kilos en un mois, il nage dans ses vêtements. Ses rides, aussi, sont plus visibles. « J'ai 68 ans et maintenant je les fais bien », constate celui qui est en grève de la faim depuis le 15 mai pour réclamer un rendez-vous avec le président de la République François Hollande. « Avec celui qui détient le pouvoir d'utiliser ou non l'arme atomique », précise-t-il.
Le président d'ACDN (Action des citoyens pour le désarmement nucléaire) veut, ni plus ni moins, le persuader de renoncer à cette force de dissuasion « en vertu de l'article 6 du traité de non-prolifération des armes nucléaires. » Et d'organiser un référendum, s'il le faut, sur la question.. Pour l'instant, son combat a difficilement trouvé un écho dans les médias nationaux, sésame utile pour que l'Élysée tende l'oreille.
Aujourd'hui fatigué, Jean-Marie Matagne arrive à un tournant de son combat. Il espère décrocher un rendez-vous cette semaine. Sinon ? « Je ne peux rien dire pour l'instant… » Hier matin, le Saintais a reçu un courrier du ministre de l'Économie sociale et solidaire, Benoît Hamon, juste pour l'avertir qu'il faisait passer sa lettre au ministre de la Défense Jean-Yves Le Drian. Certains auraient été découragés pour moins que ça. Pas lui.
Il faut dire que le gréviste de la faim a de la suite dans les idées. En 1971, il participait déjà à une marche contre l'ouverture du chantier de la centrale nucléaire de Fessenheim en Alsace. « C'était dans l'esprit de Mai 68 », confie ce militant qui n'a cessé, depuis, de dénoncer le nucléaire comme étant « une technologie autoritaire et fondamentalement dangereuse. »
Prof de philosophie
Politique, sa lutte est aussi philosophique et religieuse. « Trois évêques, dont Monseigneur Gaillot, ont pris position pour le désarmement nucléaire. L'arme atomique est incompatible avec la foi chrétienne », insiste-t-il tout en se déclarant athée. Ce père de cinq enfants a enseigné la philosophie au lycée technique Vieljeux, à La Rochelle, puis au lycée Bernard- Palissy, à Saintes, jusqu'à sa retraite il y a sept ans. « Entre-temps, j'ai été à l'origine du lycée expérimental polyvalent et maritime sur l'île d'Oléron », indique Jean-Marie Matagne.
En 1986, c'est en voyant à la télé un reportage sur Gorbatchev qu'il décide de modifier le thème de sa thèse de doctorat en philosophie. « Lorsque j'ai entendu le président de l'URSS dire qu'il n'y aurait plus aucune arme nucléaire dans son pays d'ici à l'an 2000, je me suis demandé si c'était sincère. »
De là, l'enseignant s'est intéressé au sujet et a construit une approche empirique de sa thèse qu'il a soutenue en 1991. « J'ai soumis les déclarations des hommes politiques à l'épreuve des actes et des faits en matière de désarmement nucléaire. » Il s'en est tiré avec la mention « honorable » tout en étant interdit de publication.
L'homme ne transige pas dès qu'il s'agit de défendre son engagement. En opposition avec l'accord Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV) et le PS sur le nucléaire avant l'élection présidentielle, il n'a pas repris sa carte chez les écologistes. « Je suis cependant resté coopérateur du parti, prévient-il. Une motion d'urgence reprenant les objectifs de ma grève de la faim sera d'ailleurs débattue au prochain conseil fédéral d'EELV les 22 et 23 juin. » Il ira la défendre lui-même si sa santé le lui permet.
