Burmese army and Border Guard Police personnel took part in rape, gang rape, invasive body searches, and sexual assaults in at least nine villages in Maungdaw district between October 9 and mid-December of last year.
The sexual violence did not appear to be random or opportunistic, but part of a coordinated and systematic attack against Rohingya, in part because of their ethnicity and religion.
“These horrific attacks on Rohingya women and girls by security forces add a new and brutal chapter to the Burmese military’s long and sickening history of sexual violence against women,” said Priyanka Motaparthy, Human Rights Watch senior emergencies researcher.

Help Stop Rape in Conflict!

During armed conflict, rape becomes a strategic weapon to destroy people, communities, and entire nations. While collective efforts have bought this issue to the fore, it’s time to unite and stop rape in war.
The International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict has brought together the world’s female Nobel Peace Laureates, international advocacy organizations, including Human Rights Watch, groups working at a community level, and individuals like you – all in a coordinated effort for change.
Together, we will demand bold political leadership to prevent rape in conflict, to protect civilians and rape survivors, and call for justice – including prosecution of those responsible.
